The Redeemer

Continuing through the story of Boaz and Ruth this sermon examines the scene when Boaz is before the elders of the city to discuss and decide who will redeem Ruth and Naomi. We see that Boaz reflects the self-sacrificing love of God and the blessing of a household built up in the Lord. This story challenges our lack of sacrifice and our selfish priorities. Only a vision of God’s grace and love can set us free from such self-focus. Passage:…

Postmillenialism

Recent discussions on Christian Nationalism and Theonomy (see previous seminars) have often turned to matters of eschatology. It is maintained that eschatology is connected to how one views cultural engagement. Many assume that postmillenialism is the underlying commitment. However, in this seminar, moving past labels, Pastor Tim presents the eschatology of hope presented in the New Testament and in history. As William Carey put it, when we expect great things from God, we attempt great things for God. This is…

Plans and Providence

As the story of Ruth continues we reflect in this sermon on the plans of men and the providence of God. Naomi puts forth a risky plan to see Boaz and Ruth married. As the plan unfolds, with its success and setbacks, we’re reminded that God is carrying out his plan of grace and mercy. Passage: Ruth 3

Theonomy

There is confusion and division surrounding “Theonomy.” This seminar seeks to answer some commonly asked questions and reflect upon this conversation in the church. This seminar raises and answers the following questions: 1) What is theonomy or general equity theonomy? 2) What about concerns of separation of church and state; salvation by works; state religion and forced conversion; confusion of law and gospel; and a misunderstanding of the discontinuity between old and new covenants? 3) Grappling with modern assumptions that…

God’s Instruments of Blessing

The book of Ruth is a story of God’s merciful provision to undeserving people. We learn in this chapter that God often pours out his blessing through human instruments. In this sermon we consider God’s providential care through human effort. This is an opportunity for us to see the greatness of our God and work diligently for him and for the good of others. Passage: Ruth 2

Christian Nationalism

There is confusion and division surrounding “Christian Nationalism.” This seminar seeks to answer some commonly asked questions and reflect upon this conversation in the church. This seminar raises and answers the following questions: 1) What should we think about the term “Christian Nationalism”? 2) Can a nation be called Christian? 3) Is it good to be in a Christian nation? 4) What does the New Testament say about it? 5) How does a nation get there? 6) Why are we…

Rebellion and Return

In the days of the judges everyone did that which was right in their own eyes. Elimelech and Naomi were a couple of their time as they fled to Moab for help rather than to the Lord. However, their decision is used of God to demonstrate his faithfulness and meticulous providential care. Here we begin a beautiful story that demonstrates the goodness of God to this family, the nation of Israel, and the entire world. Passage: Ruth 1

Building a Culture of Beauty in Your Home

This seminar seeks to think theologically about architecture, furniture, fashion, and the aesthetics of our homes. It is important to recognize that culture is religious externalized. We are influenced by culture and we influence culture. This is a call to be cultivators of Christian truth and beauty in our homes. The article referenced in the seminar can be read here: https://www.fairviewbaptistchurch.ca/culture-of-beauty/ Passage:

Knowing the Times

Jesus calls us not to miss what obvious about the present time. What is most important to understand in this present time is the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a call to not miss him and perish apart from his reconciling work. Do you see him? Passage: Luke 12:54-59

Jesus Came to Divide

It will surprise many today that Jesus came to divide but that is how he explains why he came. Jesus came to divide because one must accept him or reject him. Jesus came to divide because truth is polarizing. Jesus came to divide because the gospel is a matter of prime importance. May this message encourage you to be faithful to Jesus in a time of division. Passage: Luke 12:49-53

Be Ready! A Parable of Four Servants

In this passage, Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure and return. Jesus calls his followers to watchfulness and faithfulness in his physical absence. As Jesus explains, he mentions four types of servants as a warning and encouragement for us to live faithfully while we wait for his return. Passage: Luke 12:35-48

Overcoming Anxiety

Jesus commands his followers not to be anxious for anything. Of course, we are so weak and fall into anxiety. So, Jesus tenderly exhorts and instructs so that we would grow in faith and trust, overcoming anxiety. May Jesus’ words here aid you as you grow in dependence upon our heavenly Father. Passage: Luke 12:22-34
