Joy in Heaven

The Heart of the Hypocrite

Jesus is invited to a dinner with the Pharisees. They wanted to watch him as they judged him. It turns out that Jesus was watching them and pronounced judgment against them. In these interactions we get a picture of the hypocrite contrasted with the compassion, power, and wisdom of Jesus. May this serve as a caution and call to be loyal to Jesus. Passage: Luke 14:1-24

Jerusalem’s Rejection

Jesus laments over Israel’s continued rejection of his work and identity. He has continued to display his compassion and demonstration his power. Yet Israel persists in rebellion. Jesus pronounces God’s judgment yet gives a ray of hope that one day they will see him when they recognize him as the blessed one who comes in the name of the Lord. Passage: Luke 13:31-35

Will Those Who Are Saved Be Few?

In this sermon we consider a question asked of Jesus, “Will those who are saved be few?” Jesus’ answer probes deep into the heart to describe what one must do to be saved. He warns about those seeking entrance into the kingdom but are shut out and perish. Our Lord, like always, does not speak in abstraction, but makes truth very personal. A Second Chance at Repentance

Jesus extends mercy and compassion again and again. Yet religious pretenders continue to reject him and harden their hearts. In this sermon we consider how the hypocrite exercises a counterfeit repentance and contrast that with true repentance. Jesus calls us not to miss what obvious about the present time. What is most important to understand in this present time is the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a call to not miss him and perish apart from his reconciling work. Do you see him? Passage: Luke 12:54-59

Jesus Came to Divide

It will surprise many today that Jesus came to divide but that is how he explains why he came. Jesus came to divide because one must accept him or reject him. Jesus came to divide because truth is polarizing. Jesus came to divide because the gospel is a matter of prime importance. May this message encourage you to be faithful to Jesus in a time of division. Passage: Luke 12:49-53

Be Ready! A Parable of Four Servants

In this passage, Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure and return. Jesus calls his followers to watchfulness and faithfulness in his physical absence. As Jesus explains, he mentions four types of servants as a warning and encouragement for us to live faithfully while we wait for his return. Passage: Luke 12:35-48

Overcoming Anxiety

Jesus commands his followers not to be anxious for anything. Of course, we are so weak and fall into anxiety. So, Jesus tenderly exhorts and instructs so that we would grow in faith and trust, overcoming anxiety. May Jesus’ words here aid you as you grow in dependence upon our heavenly Father.
