A Cloud of Witnesses Part 1

As we continue to examine the substance and nature of faith we consider a host of examples from the old testament. Today we look at Abel, Enoch, and Noah. This is what it looks like to trust God. To not only believe in him, but to believe him.

What Is Faith?

Faith is not believing in God. Faith is believing God. Faith is trusting him. Knowing this we can see why faith bring certainty to our hope. We can see that it brings confidence in what we do not see. By faith, by trusting God, we are able to have certainty and confidence because he is trustworthy. Are you struggling with faith? Are you searching for faith? Look to God and trust him.

There Are Only Two Paths

This sermon considers the two ways or two paths that is spoken so often in Scripture. One, a path trodden by those unable to so no to the pressures or pleasures of the world, leads to judgment. The other, a road of hardship and trial, leads to glory. This strong warning is given to the church, those professing faith in Christ. Are you on this road or on the road of suffering leading to glory?

Draw Near, Hold Fast, Stir Up

Here are three commands God is calling you to do today. Do you know what it means to draw near to God? To hold fast to Christ? To stir up one another to love and good works? In this text, we examine these three important commands. Understanding what they demand of us, and most importantly, understanding the great provision and grace we have in Jesus Christ to achieve what he demands.

God Doesn’t Want Your Sacrifice

The New Testament church didn’t have priests, the mass, or penance. This is because the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ did away with those things of the past. The substance has come which makes the shadow obsolete. God has accomplished all that is needed for our forgiveness that we cannot add anything to his work. Rather than going back to the old way, we must trust in Christ and strive knowing he has won the victory.

When You Die…

Most think that is has been appointed for man to die once, then comes peace, comfort and rest. The Bible says that it has been appointed for man to die once, then comes judgment. Just as certainly as we all die, so it is certain that Christ has died to bear sin and to return again as conquering king. Are you ready for death? Are you ready for judgment? Are you ready for Christ’s return?

Why Did Jesus Have to Die?

The Bible is clear that the death of Jesus guarantees forgiveness for his followers, but why is this? How does Jesus death relate to forgiveness? Why did he have to die for God to forgive? We explore this question for both the original hearers of Hebrews as well as bringing understanding to the modern mind.

An Eternal Redemption Secured

The recipients of this letter needed to see how great Christ and his eternal redemption is so that they could face the pressures around them. Nothing has changed. As we face temptations, we need to overcome temptation by having a correct view of who Jesus is and what he has done. Let us see Christ as our greatest treasure.

The New Covenant Community

The church is Christ’s new covenant community here on earth. As such, things such as membership and baptism are defined by the terms and promises of the new covenant. This is why we hold to a regenerate church membership and believers’ baptism. Not only that, the new covenant promises transform this community to love one another.

The New Covenant: Forgiveness that Forgets

Sin is the biggest problem standing in the way of a relationship with God. Humanity has tried a number of ways to deal with the problem of sin but none of them are effective. God deals with sin by being merciful and forgiving to such an extent that the all-knowing God forgets sin! This promise is part of the terms of the new covenant and guarantees its success.
