Sermons on Sin
The Father and Two Sons
Jesus tells the famous parable of the prodigal son. In this parable we learn to about sin, repentance, and celebrating with those who are reconciled to God. What is most profound, however, is the picture of the love of God as expressed through the father in Jesus’ story. It is this love of God that should compel us to come and be forgiven our sins and this love of God that should cause us to celebrate the goodness of God.…
Sins Destruction: The Root and Fruit of LGBTQ+
Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death.” The consequence of sin is pain, misery, destruction, and eventually death. We see this in all types of sin and it is especially the case for sexual sin. This sermon looks at the ideas underlying the LGBTQ+ movement and how they can be embraced unwittingly by the church. We’re reminded of the consequence of sinful ideas and then see the (only) answer in Jesus Christ who gives salvation as a free…
Maggots, Worms, and God’s Grace
What do we do with Bildad’s words that compare man with maggots and worms? Is this comparison fair? How does the Bible describe us in comparison with God?In this sermon, we consider man in comparison to God and why this leads us to the wonder and beauty of grace. Questions to consider:1. Can you define total depravity?2. Why can thoughts of our own sin lead us to rejoice?3. How do we commonly deny the need for grace?
The Fall of Mankind
In this sermon we explore the entrance of sin into God’s good creation. Where did sin come from? Where did Satan come from? Not only do we consider the source of sin, this passage teaches us about temptation, about sin’s consequence, and most importantly, sin’s remedy. In a time where sin has corrupted God’s good creation, God’s grace is seen extended to Adam and Eve and the entire race.
Total Depravity
In this lesson we look at the doctrine of total depravity. It’s an exploration of what it means to inherit a sinful nature. After a clarification of what this doctrine is not, we explore what it is. While often denied and much maligned in today’s culture, this doctrine exalts the glory of God and the beauty of his salvation from first to last.
The Origin of Sin
Where did sin come from? How could sin enter into God’s good creation? Didn’t God make everything good? If God doesn’t sin, does that mean that he permitted sin? Or did he plan it or ordain it? We explore these important questions and we seek to understand the beginnings of sin in God’s universe and the purpose sin has in God’s eternal, wise plan.
The Fall and its Effect
Most understand that we inherit a sinful nature from Adam, but the Scriptures also teach that we’ve been imputed with Adam’s guilt. That is, the whole human race stands condemned because of Adam’s one sin. Rather than this being a depressing doctrine it rather lays the necessary foundation for salvation in Christ. For it is Christ, called the last and second Adam, who imputes to us righteousness, justification and life. This is possible because of imputation. There are two representatives…
The Discipleship Road
Humility and suffering mark the road that Jesus walked. For his followers, the weight of sin must be shed as we travel this road to the kingdom of God.
The Heart of Man
The religious leaders continue to confront Jesus. This time Jesus demonstrates that their traditions nullify the commandments of God. Not only that, but their traditions expose their faulty view of man. They believe that what defiles a person comes from the outside. Jesus teaches that what defiles a man comes from within. That is, evil is in the heart of man. The only cure for the human heart is found in Jesus Christ. In him we find forgiveness and grace…
