Book Recommendation: King of Kings

The role of the government and its relationship with the church have been hotly debated over the past several years. The COVID years, a rapidly changing culture, shifting morality, and sharp divisions between political parties have left many Christians longing for some clarity and direction. Complicating matters are nebulous but loaded labels like “Christian Nationalism” which is variously defined and is sometimes used willingly and other times pejoratively. The rancor and hostility that can come with the discussion has left many not even wanting to wade in.

A few months ago I was pleased to read a short book by James Baird entitled, King of Kings: A Reformed Guide to Christian Government. At just over 100 pages, it can be read in just one or two sittings and gives a simple but excellent overview of a Christian view of government.

Baird argues that the government must promote Christianity as the only true religion. His thesis may sound bold and novel to many, but he uses Scripture, logic, and historic confessions to make his case. This is not some far-out, “radical” view, it is the classic, “vanilla” view of Scripture and history.

While there are legitimate differences that believers can wrestle through as you press into the details, Baird’s thesis is (hopefully) one in which all believers can agree on. I commend it as an introduction to the topic. And, if you don’t agree with Baird’s thesis today, all the more reason to take up and read.

PS The book is available at our bookstore if you want to get your copy today.
