Use Your Knowledge to Build Up

Should Christians drink alcohol? That's the broad question that is asked.

What we see in this text is that knowledge of God must manifest itself in love, and this love is best displayed in self sacrifice. That is the example of Jesus Christ in the gospel. The love of God not only excludes practicing idolatry but also demands giving up one's right or privilege for the sake of the brethren.

This speaks to many issues in the church today. Certainly it's applicable to the ongoing debate on Christians drinking alcohol.

1 Corinthians

The book of 1 Corinthians was written to a troubled yet gifted church. Paul, an apostle of God, through the inspiration of the Spirit addresses a number of issues that are so relevant to today's church. He address divisions, the Lord's supper, the importance of the resurrection, sexual immorality, marriage, spiritual gifts, and much more. He applies the gospel to each issue. Certainly we need to listen to God's word as these issues are addressed.

Tim Stephens is the senior pastor of Fairview Baptist Church.
