Genesis and Modern Biology

January 15, 2017 ()

Bible Text: Genesis 1:1 |

Series:

Modern biology has revealed that simple cells contain loads of specified information. Does this support evolutionary ideas or does it again demonstrate the truthfulness of God's word?

The following are the images mentioned in the sermon.

Is it Christians clinging to belief in spite of the facts?
"I want atheism to be true and am made uneasy by the fact that some of the most intelligent and well-informed people I know are religious believers. It isn't just that I don't believe in God and, naturally, hope that I'm right in my belief. It's that I hope there is no God! I don't want there to be a God; I don't want the universe to be like that.
My guess is that this cosmic authority problem is not a rare condition and that it is responsible for much of the scientism and reductionism of our time. One of the tendencies it supports is the ludicrous overuse of evolutionary biology to explain everything about life, including everything about the human mind."
—Thomas Nagel, atheist philosopher, University of New York.

Recommended Resources
Stephen Meyer, Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design (2010, 628 pages).
If there is one book to read on the subject, it is this one. Meyer speaks about much more than just DNA. He includes the work of Axe and Dembski. He also discusses scientific method, the history of molecular biology, the history of origins theories, and also includes discussions about all recent origin theories and gives them devastating critiques—including the RNA world hypothesis which claims to be the materialists best hope today.

Douglas Axe, Undeniable: How Biology Confirms Our Intuition That Life Is Designed (2016, 304 pages).
If you're looking for something more than can be conveyed in a DVD, then this is a good book. It is shorter and simpler than Meyer's book. It is easily readable and it becomes immensely clear that the scientific community rejects the incredible evidence against Darwinism because of the implications of the design argument. An excellent one to read and give away to friends.

William Dembski, The Design Inference: Eliminating Chance through Small Probabilities (2006, 264 pages)
Dembski seeks to formulate a mathematical formula for detecting design. That is, when an incredibly improbable event is seen, combined with a meaningful outcome, we know that design was at work—not chance. If you enjoy math and statistics, this one conclusively shows that Darwinian evolution is impossible and that the creation demands the Creator.

Evolution's Achilles' Heels (2014, Creation Ministries International)
Fifteen PhD scientists are interviewed to expose the major weaknesses of Darwinian evolution. In my opinion, this is one of the best DVDs there is to crumble the foundation of materialism and to clearly show the handiwork of the Creator.

Origin: Design, Chance and the First Life on Earth (2016, Illustra Media)
This new DVD release includes good interviews and top-notch animations to debunk the myth that life came from non-living chemicals.

Unlocking the Mystery of Life (2003, Illustra Media)
The original film by Illustra Media in their trilogy on Intelligent Design. It incorporates the arguments in Meyer's book, Signature in the Cell and Michael Behe's Darwin's Black Box which speaks about irreducible complexity.
